5th world assembly on tobacco counters health-New Delhi, India

2nd - 5th December, 2007

Dear Friends,
Welcome to the 5th WATCH-2007. At the end of the 4th WATCH 2005, a brain storming session was held among the participants and the Chairs-Sciences to analyze the limitations of the present protocols for prevention of tobacco use in many developing societies and rich countries alike, regardless of the level of education and affluence, in order to curb and control tobacco use especially among adolescents. This session was held under the joint Chairmanships of Prof. John G. Spangler (U.S.A.). Dr. Nazih Eldin( Ireland), Dr. Kazunari Satomura (Japan), Prof. Benjamin Longo Mbenza (Congo) and Dr. Finn Edier von Eyben (Denmark) and was coordinated by Dr. Bhanu lyengar. John g. spangier (u.s.a.) It was accepted with increasing realism that more concentrated and target oriented measures must be initiated and implemented if the success of dedicated professionals has to achieve results in foreseeable future. The areas identified were
a) Community: Its role in agriculture and industry
b) Media: A comprehensive campaign against all forms of tobacco
c) Protocols: Eliminating the cultivation and consumption of crude tobacco
In addition, downsizing environments that encourage smoking and optimizing smoking reduction / cessation policies with the help of National Health Services would positively lead to a reduction in health hazard of smoking and passive smoking. The issues identified will be addressed by experts from all over the world and the directions for future shall be formulated by the global group of WATCH for recommendations to state and societies the world over.
