Insulin receptor substrate (IRS) molecules are important mediators in insulin signaling, playing a central role in cellular functions such as growth, survival and metabolism. IRS-1 is a multisite docking protein containing multiple tyrosine phosphorylation motifs that serve as docking sites for intracellular signaling molecules containing SH2 domains following activation of the insulin and IGF-1 receptors.
