HyaluronidasesareagroupofenzymesthatdegradeHyaluronan(HA),alinearpolysaccharidecomprisedofarepeatingdisaccharideofN-acetylglucosamineandD-glucuronicacid.HAisinvolvedinmanybiologicalprocessesincludingstructuralsupport,cellmigrationandtissueturnover.CirculatingHAlevelshavealsobeenshowntocorrelateinseveraldisorderssuchasliverdiseaseandcertaintypesofcancer.HyaluronidaseshavebecomeanimportantareaofstudyduetotheirregulatoryfunctioninHAmetabolismandtheirroleinphysiologicalprocessessuchasfertilizationandwoundhealing.ElevatedexpressionlevelsofthegeneencodingHyaluronidase1havebeenfoundinatypicalductalhyperplastictissues,suggestingthepossibilitythatitmaybeaviablebioMarkerforidentifyingpremalignantlesionsthatcandevelopintobreastcancer.Researchhasalsoshownthathyaluronidasesareinvolvedinseveralpathologicalprocessessuchasbacterialpathogenesis,thespreADIngoftoxins/venomsandcancerprogression,makinghyaluronidasesapotentialpharmacologicaltarget.
