Alginate,commonlycalledsodiumalginate,isalinearpolysaccharide.Thecopolymerconsistsoftwouronicacids:D-mannuronicacid(M)andL-guluronicacid(G).Sodiumalginateaswellasotheralkalimetalalginatesarewatersoluble,whereasthesaltsofpolyvalentcations,e.g.,calcium,nickel,copper,cobaltarewaterinsoluble,withtheexceptionofmagnesium.Polyvalentcationsbindtothepolymerwhenevertherearetwoneighboringguluronicacidresidues.Thus,polyvalentcationsareresponsIBLeforthecross-linkingofbothdifferentpolymermoleculesanddifferentpartsofthesamepolymerchain.Theprocessofgelation,i.e.theexchangeofpolyvalentionsforsodiumionsiscarriedoutunderrelativelymildconditions.
