Hyaluronicacid(HA)isahighmolecularweightanionicpolysaccharide(1,000-10,000kD)composedofrepeatingdisaccharidesandisoneofseveralglycosaminoglycancomponentsoftheextracellularmatrixofconnectivetissue.

FreeHAistakenupbytheliverwhereitisdegradedandrecycled.Manychronicliverdiseases,includinginfection(hepatitisBorC),toxicity(alcoholanddrugs),genetic(hemochromatosis),autoimmunity,andmalignancy,resultinliverinflammationwhichcanprogresstoliverfibrosisandcirrhosis;causingimpairmentofliverfunctionandresultinginarapidincreaseincirculatingHAlevels.

DataindicatesarelationshipbetweenHAlevels,localinflammationandseverityofdisease.RecentpublicationshavealsoshownthatHAlevelsinurineareindicativeofbladdercancer,thatHAlevelsaredirectlycorrelatedtoliverdisease,andsuggestsenhancedbreakdownofHAinthelungsofpatientswithchronicobstructivepulmonarydisease.Inaddition,serumlevelsofHAhavebeenfoundtobeelevatedinpatientswithrheumatoidarthritis.
