Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide (VIP) is a peptide hormone which has several roles in both the body and the brain. VIP induces smooth muscle relaxation, stimulates water secretion, and inhibits gastric juice secretion in the digestive system. VIP plays a key role as a synchronizing agent in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) which controls the circadian rhythm. VIP[Ac-Tyr1,D-Phe2] inhibits binding and selectively inhibits VIP- and GRF-induced effects on adenylyl cyclase.
