Keratinocytesarethemostprevalenttypeofskincells,comprisingnearly95%oftheepidermis.Keratinocytecellsoriginateinthebasalskinlayerandgrowdenselyoutwardthroughthelayersoftheepidermis.Keratinocytecellsarecontinuouslyshedandreplacedfromtheouterlayer.Theyareconsideredthebuildingblocksofskinbecausetheyareresponsibleforkeratinproduction,thekeycomponentofhairandnails.Keratinocytecellsaretightlyinterwovenandformseamsbetweenthenervesandunderlyingtissuesoftheepidermis.Thisallowsthemtocreateaprotectivebarriertopreventinfectioussubstancescomingintothebodythroughtheskin.Also,keratinocytesplayanessentialroleinwoundhealing,demonstratingahigherexpressionofPDGFA(fibroblaststimulatingplatelet-derivedgrowthfactor)thanfibroblastsandregulatingfibroblastactivity.
