Insulin is a peptide hormone produced by beta cells of the pancreatic islets. In type 1 diabetes, pancreatic beta cells are destroyed by an auto-immune process and insulin cannot be produced. In type 2 diabetes insulin is secreted into the blood in response to glucose levels but there is resistance to the action of insulin, rendering it partially ineffective. Therefore, more insulin is required to normalise blood sugar levels.
