Interleukin-2(IL-2)isa133aminoacidglycoproteinwithoneintramoleculardisulfidebondandvariableglycosylation.ItissecretedbyactivatedTcellsandinducesproliferationandmaturationofactivatedTcells,naturalkillercells,andlymphokineactivatedkillercells.IL-2alsostimulatesproliferationofantibody-producingBcells,activatesneutrophils,andinducesmononuclearcellstosecreteIFN-γandTNF-αand-β.Moreover,studieshaveshownthatIL-2isrequiredforactivation-inducedapoptosis,animportanthemeostaticmechanismintheimmunesystem,whichisinvolvedinthemaintenanceofperipheraltolerancetoself-antigens.
