Lumican(LUM)isthemajorkeratansulfateproteoglycanofthecorneaanditbindscollagenfibrils.Innoncornealtissues,lumicanispresentasalowornonsulfatedglycoproteinandhasbeenfoundintheaorta,cartilage,liver,skeletalmuscle,kidney,pancreas,brain,placentaandlung.Complicationsofthecorneahavebeenconfirmedusinglumican-nullmice.Thesemiceexhibitcornealopacity,skinfragility,andimpairedcollagenfibrillogenesis.Morerecentstudiesshowlumicanhasanintegralroleincellmigration,adhesionandproliferation.Theexpressionoflumicanhasalsobeenexaminedinbreast,pancreaticandcolorectalcancer.Theaffectoflumicandependsonthetypeofcancerasithasbeenshowntohavebothapositiveandnegativeaffectontumorgrowth.
