3-Oxo deoxycholic acid is a human metabolite. It’s a derivative of 7-deoxycholic acid in which the hydroxyl group at the 3rd position is substituted with a keto group as a result of formal oxidation of the acid.

Deoxycholic acid is one of the main secondary bile acids in the human organism, and it’s amongst the most common products of bacterial metabolism in the intestines. The secondary bile acids, alongside its derivatives, including 3-Oxo deoxycholic acid, are widely used in various fields of human clinical and pre-clinical medicine for analysis on emulsifying fats, dissolving gallstones, and more.

3-Oxo deoxycholic acid, in particular, is a subject of research on whether cytotoxicity of deoxycholic bile acid derivatives is active against human ventriculi carcinoma cell line (MGC 7901), human cervical carcinoma cell line (Hela), and human liver carcinoma cell line (SMMC 7404).
