IntheASPItest,plateletsareactivatedbyarachidonicacid,whichisconvertedbytheplateletcyclooxygenaseenzyme(COX-1)tothepotentplateletagoNISTthromboxaneA2.ArachidonicacidaloneisnotaplateletagonistandisthephysiologicalsubstrateoftheplateletCOX-1.Therefore, plateletactivationintheASPItestallowsaverysensitiveandspecificdetectionofAspirin®action.
